I left my bike without the lock, and nobody
stole it.
Describe
As
everybody, I bought a bicycle to be able to move easier around the city. In one
of the first days with it, I forgot to lock it before getting into the city
library. I realized that 15 minutes after and I quickly ran to check if it was
still there. Surprisingly for me, it was there. Since that day, I have left my
bike without the lock several times and nobody took it. Maybe for another
person this situation can be casual but for me it is very different from my
country.
Interpret
This is not
an easy situation to interpret because it goes beyond the Finnish culture. The
reason why almost everybody acts correctly is because they live in community.
If someone decided to steal bikes, it would affect the community welfare
because they would feel less safe. In my country, if you park a bike in a
public space (like libraries or the city hall) without locking it, it will
probably be stolen in 10 minutes. That is because in some countries (like mine)
people follow their own interests and the criminality rates are higher.
Evaluate
I really
think that safeness is one of the main advantages of Finland and it is shown in
the confidence they have on leaving personal objects in public places. Looking
at these actions you can realize that this country is very advance and open
minded. Maybe if we look from a Finnish
person perception, this must be the most normal thing and maybe they have never
realized why there is almost none criminality in here. In my opinion, this is
because they have been very well educated.
I have
posted this photo in order to show what can happen to your bike even if it is
locked.
We have the same kind of problem in France.
