The Radio-Heaters - Finnish Band

- The Radio-Heaters -

During the Automn break I spent one week in Helsinki. Over this time period, I met a Finnish music group named « radio-heaters » (with reference to the wordplay « radiators »). This band is composed of two trumpeter, one sousophoner , one drummer and two slide tromboner. These music players are old between 17 to 24, and they travel accross finland to show their talent and originality.

Consequently after discussing with them in front of the Stockmann (near the train station), they told me that they seem to be « music nomad » playing for their their pleasure. According to them, play music in the street is « fun » and sometimes it allows them to earn money as 30 euros per person per day. So during their holidays, weekends, national holidays or sometimes to cover special events like birthdays, cocktails or dinner parties, they try to make people happy and to have an impact on their behavior in a short way.

Thus the quartet interpret world famous pop music like « umbrella » of Rihanna, « The Fox» of ylvis or « pumped up kicks» of Foster the People ... In their opinion it’s essential to bring great « authenticity » to the performance » in relation to their interpretation. People in the street need to be impress and touch by the way they are trying to expres their music. Indeed, they have for me a true personalities and I was inspired by their courage, determination and perseverance. Finally , what I have taken away from this meeting is : they play instruments not to be known but however just for brought hapiness and kindness to strangers.
