The Finns do not know the word „Please“
The
Finns do not know the word „Please“¨
Description:
When I visited Centria for the
first time, I went to outside to smoke as ussual after lesson to clear my head
and prepare for next lesson. Some Finnish guy came to me and asked for
cigarette like this
„Do you have cigarette?“ I was little bit confused that some foreign just came to me and ask me for something and did not say the magic word „please“ at least. But I am friendly so I just made a joke like „Where is the magic word?“ and gave him the cigarette. Suddenly he told me like three times thank you.

But I am friendly so I just made a joke like „Where is the magic word?“ and gave him the cigarette. Suddenly he told me like three times thank you.
Interpretation:
In the first moments I thought that the Finn guy just saw
Exchange student so he just was just shy or he did not know English very well
so he did not say please because he forgot.. Another explanation of this
situation is that this guy was just rude.
Evaluation:
After conversation with this Finn guy I understood that
Finnish language does not include word please. And for Finns is quite problem to
learn this problematics like when use this word. So after this experiance I
know that Finns are not trying to be rude or something like that but they just
can not say please but on the other hand they are very thankfull much more than
other people.

Music assignment, Titimbe Berggren
On wednessday the 28th of September, Centria organize the usually school party at Calle and there was a performing artist on that day call Arttu Lindeman who was born on 11 October 2016. He is a Finnish rap artist and a video blogger. His channel in You Tube has more than 160 000 subscribers.
In July 2015 Lindeman published a self-released song Mainstreamflownjuntti to You tube. In February 2016, he signed a recording contract with Sony Music which "Mainstreamflownjuntti" chapter was removed from YouTube and Spotify.

I really liked that party because Centria students showed a lot of love to Arttu's music by singing along with him when he was performing on stage and he had plenty of energy and love and this caught my attention which after his performance he went to the VIP section and i had to go towards that direction to get a clear look of him.

Music Assignement
When I went to Helsinki during the autumn break, I went to see a concert
of JVG, more known as Jare &VilleGalle. This is a rap duo made with Jare
Joakim Brand and Ville-Petteri Galle. They are both born in 1987 and come from Helsinki,
Finland.
The band was created in 2009 and their first album went out in 2011.
Today they have four albums.
This is not the music I usually listen but I enjoy the experience. I
just wish I could understand the lyrics.

Music Assignment
I visited
West Coast club in Kokkola this Saturday (29.10.) because of concert of one
Finnish band- MÖNNI. This music band from Helsinki plays punk/punkrock/hardrock
and has 5 members: Pekka Monni (Bass guitar), Mopo Vartiainen (drums), Mika
Keimo (guitar), Peto (guitar) and Raivo-Elvis (singer). These guys write and
make their own music and all of their songs are in finnish.
I have never been in a hardrock concert before, so I was curious how the music and atmosphere will be. Before concert I was listening some of Mönni´s songs which I found in youtube and I really started look forward to it.
I have never been in a hardrock concert before, so I was curious how the music and atmosphere will be. Before concert I was listening some of Mönni´s songs which I found in youtube and I really started look forward to it.
The concert was to begin at 22:00, but I came to West Coast
quite later- around 22:40.
I entered and
to my surprise....no band, no live music, no crowded club!
The concert was
over!! I was shocked, because usually when I go to concert in Czech, a band is
playing for more than 2hours!
So I am really disappointed that I missed my first hardrock
concert...(and also- of course- that I am not able to accomplish this Music assignment.)
But.... during holidays I visited Helsinki and one music
band was playing in the middle of the street. I know that this is not a real concert,
but I was listening to them for more than 30minutes I think. Their music was
amazing - 5 young boys were playing famous songs in their own way (so covers)
only with trumpets, trombone, tuba and drums. Atmosphere was great, many people
who were just walking around stopped and started to listen the music (few of
them started also singing and dancing). Unfortunattely I have no idea what the
name of this band is, because it wasn´t written anywhere. I just know that I
really enjoyed their show as well as many passerby.
Here in this video you can see one of the songs that band was
playing.
(Original song: Get Lucky from Daft Punk)
Music Assignment
Mönni or Mönnimafia is a Punkrock group band. It was formed in May 2014 in Helsinki. Those five guys are making their own music and songs with original influences: Vivaldi, Beethoven, Chopin & Jaakko Teppo. They combine those influences with their own band's signature.
On the 29 of October they were in Kokkola at the West Coast Billiard. I went there with friends to enjoy this concert and discover what kind of music is punk rock. They have a really funny style by clothes they wear during concert.
Their music is really dynamic but their lyrics are screamed and you feel that they are hungry about something. The songs are in Finnish so I couldn't understand but they look like rebellious teenager.
Their catch phrase is:"Tämä on enemmän kuin totuus,
tämä on enemmän kuin elämä,
tämä on Mönnimafia"
meaning :
"This is more than the truth,
This is more than life,
This is Mönnimafia"
The band members incluses:
Drums: Mopo Vartiainen
Guitare & Co: Mika Keimo
Guitare : PETO
Vox: Raivo-Elvis

D-I-E - Online Shopping
Describe
When I came to Finland , there was a interesting phenomenon that if I wanted to buy some things, it seems that I must go to the supermarket. Actually, I have already used to buying most of the things on the Internet. For example, I like to eat snacks, I am always used to ordering lots of snacks on the internet.
When I came to Finland, I have to go to the supermarket to buy my lovely snacks. And I know that Finland supports the online shopping and has their own shopping site, but it seems not enough to me. The types of Chinese website is very well equipped.
Interpret
The first reason I guess that most Chinese have a smart people and they are used to shopping with APP,its very easy and convenient. The other reason that one of my teacher told me Finns are more likely to buy things they can see and touch. On the other hands, they prefer shopping at big supermarkets.

Whatever the entity shopping or online shopping, I think they both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Entity shopping is more authenticity but spends some time, and online shopping is more convenient but sometimes goods are not satisfactory. Music Assignment
On the 30th of September, I visited the Centria Night Music event.
There was a lot of different genres, from traditional Finnish music to Jazz improvisation and classical music.
I was very surprised to see my room neighbour play the violine. Just a few days ago I met him at Sauna, where I had the chance to talk to him.
They all study music and sometimes they play in the Corners pub. They also don't play in just one band, but in a few different bands.

The traditional Finnish music was very interesting, espescially when five people were playing their kanteles simultaneously.
It was nice to hear the classical music being played since it included some compositions from famous German and Austrian composers, like Beethovens "Für Elise". I will definitly visit the pub when my roommate and his friends are playing.
Music Assignment
On the 8.Oct,I went to the Circus, Helsinki to see a melodic death metal bank named Insomnium with my friends cause from one introduced. Actually, I have never heard this type of song until this concert. I was very curious about why the melodic death metal is so popular in Finland even in the world.
When I listened to the whole play ,I was shocked. The overall feeling of Insomnium is that immersed in the sadness of the atmosphere. It is to let a person admire their composition skills, and with no difficulty and speed to make people feel amazing, but more to make people savor special moments. For example, the Down with the Sun :Oh darkness if in thy arms, I could rest for a while. The beginning is so poetic.
As far as I am concerned,on the one hand, they have their own national culture into their music, on the other hand, they have a different understanding of Norse mythology, full of odd shape creatures, psychedelic color is also very strong, which also gives music creators a lot of space. In addition, the myths of northern Europe have the contents of the world's destruction, this may also a reason why the music full feel with dignified and sad.

D-I-E Vehicles give way to pedestrians
Vehicles give way to pedestrians
Describe
when I walk on the road in Finland with my friends,I found vehicles would give way to pedestrians. When I cross the road, cars would stop in the distance. At first,I felt strange. In Shanghai, the rhythm of this city is so swift that everyone is busy working. So vehicles almost will not voluntarily give way to pedestrians.

Now the comity, in fact, under the guidance of legal norms and education for many years, people gradually develop the habit and then formed a part of culture. When vehicles become more and more popular,Vulnerable groups should be protected. Moreover, the pace of life in Finland is slow. So, most people do not mind waiting a minutes.

Music Assignment - Huilan Jin
The Insomnium band was formed in the cold spring in 1997. In Finland's small town, Joensuu, four young people set up a heavy mental band. In the beginning, the band has defined their musical style, cruel and melody. They combine their favorite elements with their own band's unique style. Most of the lyrics come from the Finnish folklore that can be seen everywhere, which is about love and sad story of death.
On the Oct 8th,I went to Helsinki to enjoy this concert with my friends. In the beginning of concert,I felt the atmosphere immediately was brought to the boiling point.I have always loved these types of music, because I think their songs really show The real sing the darkness and fear of beauty.
The band members included:
drummer:Markus Hirvonen
guitarist:Ville Friman and Ville Vänni
Bass player:Niilo Sev leader singer:auml;nen

Music Assignment - Wang Jie
I love this band because of its unique melody and strong storytelling. Actually it is well worth hearing if one has a taste for Nordic death metal that is beautifully, unapologetically melodic. When one thinks of Scandinavian metal, Finland has turned out to be an impressive player — impressive for black metal, impressive for folk metal, impressive for goth metal, and impressive for death metal. All in all, Insomnium have gave a summary of the melodic side of Finnish death metal.
The composers of most songs in this concert are Niilo Sevänen (bass/vocals) and Ville Friman (guitar).
D-I-E, Pay the Bill in the Supermarket
Describe
There was such a situation that I wanted to pay the bill in the market and it was 4, 60€. So l looked at my wallet and gave the cashier 5, 60€. I thought the cashier would return me 1€. Because in China if I give the cashier 5, 60€, they will back to me 1€ (only one coin). However, it is different in Finland. In reality, the cashier returned me 0, 60€ directly. Afterward she collected 5€ and returned me 0, 40€. It was much more troublesome to get the change twice.
Interpret
In my opinion, the main reason is that the cashiers in Finland often use the machines to calculate so that it would be easier to collect money and give the change according to the machines (There is less possibility of error). On the contrary, some people think that 1€ is only one coin and it is easier to recognize the correct number and used as the change. In addition, chanting out the result while doing the sums in one's head may be easier in some other countries because of reading matter and calculation method.
Evaluate
It puzzled me a lot at that time. The coins are heavier than paper,so I don't like to have too many coins in my hand. All in all, the custom of paying the bill in Finland unfitted me.

D-I-E, Work - Life Balance
This is the first
time that I have been to Finland. I have living in Kokkola for 2 months and I
have noticed something about Finnish lifestyle. When I came here one of the
most interesting thing was the balance between work and life. In Finland,
people good at their work and they can also have the time they need. They have
time for their jobs, families and social lives. When I notice this first time,
I thought how it can be possible to manage this?
Interpret
I live in a
crowded city in my country. In general, people have problems with their free
times, even the students. We have competitive educational system in my country
and students always try to study more and more and make their bests. To do
this, sometimes students think it is better to study for long hours than spend
free time with your family or friends. In Finland, people have the best educational
system and they have also good social life.
Work, family,
friends, sleep or fitness? I always think that you have to pick some of them if
you want to have balance in your life. However, people can manage the time for
all of these in Finland as I experienced. They have short working hours but it
is really efficient and enough for them here.
Evaluate
In my opinion, it
is really important to have work – life balance in our lives and it is really
nice to do something without being in hurry. Maybe if I ask to Finnish people
that how can you manage this balance in your life, they will say it is normal
and maybe they do not make an effort for this. It is mostly about their lifestyle
and culture. I think this is really a good lifestyle and I wish I could have
the same in my hometown.
Carolina Guadarrama D-I-E Music Assignment
Music Assignment
Last Friday afternoon I went to the Kokkola's Conservatory to see the a Rock band play songs of Foo Fighters which is an alternative rock band of the nineties and the purpose of the performance was a "tribute" for them.
This Band was formed by a lead singer whose name is Tiia Katajamaen, a guitarist, a pianist, a drummer, a showgirl and a special guest (my favorite) a violinist.
Between all the interpreted songs I have to admit that my favorite was "The best of you" which is the only song I knew at that moment but also those in which the violin was present.
At the end of the performance I noticed that the singer was actually a student and that concert was part of her final presentation,
Finally I must say that I'm not used to listen to music of this style, but being there enjoying the new experience was nice , definitely it wasn't what I was expecting because it was funny to me see the spectators on their seats and occasionally yelling, I was ready to jump and scream but it wasn't like that.

On 21th of September there was a music event in the Corner’s pub in Kokkola. When I came to pub there were so many people inside and the atmosphere was really good. There were young people inside and some them were student musicians from Centria. Different bands have played and sung. There were different genres of music such as pop, country, rock and blues. They were mostly singing in English. There were various instruments such piano, drums, electric guitar and saxophone.
In general, I liked the event because the band was always changing and you had a choice to listen different kind of music genre. Also, the singers and other musicians were young people so I felt like I am in the concert with my friends.
Also, on the 30th of September I visited ‘Centria Night
Music' event in Centria Conservatory. It has started at 18:00 and it was
divided into six parts. There were breaks between the parts and you could have
coffee with your friends. In the concert, we had a chance to listen various
kind of music genres. Students and teachers were playing and singing all
together. It has started with a popular song ‘It was always you’ in acoustic
form and I liked it. Also, I saw different instruments that I have never seen
before.

The most beautiful part of the concert was the second
part, Kamu Karkeloi. Musicians played their national instruments such as
5-kielinen kantele, tikkukantele and 2-rivinen haitari. I think 2-rivinen
haitari was the best part of the concert. It was really interesting and
different than the others.

The Radio-Heaters - Finnish Band
- The
Radio-Heaters -
During the Automn break I spent one week in Helsinki. Over
this time period, I met a Finnish music group named « radio-heaters »
(with reference to the wordplay « radiators »). This band is composed
of two trumpeter, one sousophoner , one drummer and two slide tromboner. These
music players are old between 17 to 24, and they travel accross finland to show
their talent and originality.
Consequently after discussing with them in front of the Stockmann
(near the train station), they told me that they seem to be « music
nomad » playing for their their pleasure. According to them, play music in
the street is « fun » and sometimes it allows them to earn money as
30 euros per person per day. So during their holidays, weekends, national
holidays or sometimes to cover special events like birthdays, cocktails or
dinner parties, they try to make people happy and to have an impact on their
behavior in a short way.
Thus the quartet interpret world famous pop music like
« umbrella » of Rihanna, « The Fox» of ylvis or « pumped up
kicks» of Foster the People ... In their opinion it’s essential to bring great
« authenticity » to the performance » in relation to their
interpretation. People in the street need to be impress and touch by the way
they are trying to expres their music. Indeed, they have for me a true
personalities and I was inspired by their courage, determination and
perseverance. Finally , what I have taken away from this meeting is : they
play instruments not to be known but however just for brought hapiness and
kindness to strangers.

Music assignment by Oriol Fabregas
Last Saturday (22th of October) there was a really nice concert in Kilta Bar made by a local group called Kaiku. As it is typicall here, all the pubs and bars give to small groups the chance to show their ability to play wonderful music and help the young people of the bar to have a great time. The band consisted on a nice soothing voice female singer and two instrument players. One musician was playing the saxofon and the other the acoustic guitar.
They didn't play an exact type of music because during all night they were displaying all kind of themes. The majority of songs played were classic 70s-80s-90s rock and pop hits. Some examples are Every Breath You Take by Police, Hotel California by Eagles and Have You Ever Seen The Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
They also played Finnish music which all the people of the bar fully enjoyed by singing the lyrics. That was what I liked the most in the concert because you feel really an stranger when everybody is singing a song in a pub which you don't even understand a word. To sum up, I truly enjoy the concert and they made me have a nice time with the company of other students

Most of all, we were impressed by the part "Kamu karkeloi". Musicians played their own compositions on national instruments such as tikkukantele and 5-kielen kantele. Also, the part with improvisations can't be overlooked as it is something what inspires you.
Atmosphere of the event was very homely and friendly like if it was a get-together with your friends. During the breaks you could have coffee with tasty cakes.
D-I-E Working hours
Description
Although, it's not
the first time I am visiting Finland, I’ve started seeing things from a
different angle since moving here. Even after 2 months in Kokkola, working
hours continue to amaze me.
Banks are closed on weekends? No pharmacy
after 6 pm? Can’t go to coffee shop late in the evening? Or bus stations which
don’t work at night – how is it possible if there are night buses?
Interpretation
In Russia most of the public places open
early in the morning and work until 7-10 pm. Also, there are many 24-hour shops. Want some chocolate at 3 am? Nothing stops you.
Investigating the reasons for such working
mode of Finnish shops I found out three key factors:
- to operate in the night hours you should pay special fee. So, there are government regulations in this sphere;
- to operate in the night hours you should pay special fee. So, there are government regulations in this sphere;
- employees must be paid increased rate if
they work night shifts (Note! “Night” shift in Finland – from 8 pm till 11 pm);
- trade unions closely monitor all the
proceedings.
It is simply unprofitable to work late.
Only big markets can afford it.
Evaluation
By talking to natives I’ve concluded that
the system of working hours is not considered as a problem at all. Nobody is in
a hurry to buy or serve. There are plenty more fish in the sea. Haven’t managed
to do it today? That’s OK, there is tomorrow.
Little by little, I am getting used to it –
just have to buy chocolates beforehand.

D-I-E, Individualism
Describe
One day last winter, when I was going out
from library, I saw one lady pushing a baby carriage and trying to come in. I
saw her trying so hard to hold the door and at the mean time pushing the baby
carriage in. So I run to the door and trying to hold the door for her. But
surprisingly, she said “I can do it” in Finnish with very angry voice and showed
the sign “go away” with her hand to me. I was just shocked there and really did
not understand why she was so angry, and don’t know what I did wrong.
Interpret
From what I lean about Finnish culture,
this is the typical individualism
characteristic of Finnish culture. Finnish people tend to be more
individualism, this always make them more independent. I think this is the main
reason why that lady was so angry when I try to help her at something that she
is totally capable of doing. So in that case she felt angry about it instead of
feel the kindness of me, because her self-esteem is attacked.
Evaluate
At that moment I had all the negative
feeling about this lady’s behaviour. In my country, helping others is always
accepted and very much appreciated. I felt she is rude and impolite, because I
offered my help nicely but she rejected in a very impolite way.
